You might remember that some months ago we wrote about Ida and Sara visiting us at RISE Wood Building Technology in Skellefteå. They worked very hard this spring and presented their dissertation at Chalmers last week! They also presented their thesis in front of the InFutURe Wood project during an online meeting last Friday (the 12th of June 2019). Their work made a strong impression on our team. The title of thesis is “Over and over again – Exploring possibilities with timber buildings designed for disassemble“.
Sara Bergås (b. Marklund) and Ida Lundgren are now graduates in architecture with their thesis all focused on design for disassembly, in the purpose of reusing wooden structures. At Chalmers University, Göteborg, they have recently presented their thesis called “Förünn å Förünn” – which means “Over and Over Again” in a local dialect from the area of Skellefteå and Piteå (North of Sweden). It is a beautiful thesis that refers also to identity, to the strong connection of this part of the world with wood.
Their work became part of a collaboration with our InFutURe Wood project and also with “Kiruna Sustainability Center“, a project that connects Kiruna municipality to RISE and to Luleå University of Technology. This collaboration might result in a dream scenario in which the building, a multi-storey house in wood, will actually be built by Kiruna municipality in the following year!
The thesis includes a series of very interesting and well documented studies answering the research questions: “Which timber building methods are most suitable to use when designing for disassembly?”, such as:
- a comparison of type of joints (as seen below),
- a comparison of the prefabrication level,
- a detailed comparison of the builiding systems investigated.
During the InFutURe project meeting last week the feedback from the academic partners was very positive. The two authors received congratulations for the way they approached this subject and the way it was described! We kindly recommend you to have a look in their thesis, you can find it here.
