Our research work about the state of reuse of wood today showed that in Sweden there is very little wood reused.
Most of it is chipped and used as fuel in district heating plants. There is a demand for such chipped wood and therefore it is part of a well established waste handling system.
Sorting of materials at demolition sites is a requirement by law and there is little landfill waste in Sweden. Plastics, metals, gypsum boards, concrete are recycled for a second life but not wood.
There is need for a strategy to reuse at least some of the structural wood. The challenge of construction wood reuse is similar in Finland.
