At RISE Wood Building Technology in Skellefteå we got a visit from Ida and Sara. For their dissertation they chose the same topic as our project. Coincidence! And great that we found each other.
Ida Lundgren and Sara Marklund from the towns of Skellefteå and Piteå knew about our workplace (previously known as SP Wood Technology, and before that as Trätek) from their parents.
They are architecture students in the last year at Chalmers University, Göteborg (1100 km South of here) and the subject they chose for their thesis surprised us in the most pleasant way:
“The purpose of our thesis is to promote design that enables reuse of timber constructions. We will investigate the possibilities and present practical ideas on how to design and construct for disassembly in a Swedish building context. It will include local traditional timber building references, together with an analysis of contemporary timber building techniques. Our aim is to expand the lifespan of a building structure by using joints and construction techniques that support a reuse concept.” A description we got from Ida and Sara.
During their visit today we gave them information about our activities, the partners in InFutUReWood project and how they could collaborate with them. We also told them about other projects in this research area, offered bibliographical resources and we discussed about certain techniques, the choice of adhesive and about components with no adhesive at all. We talked about the options one has when planning a building that would be deconstructed at one point (50 years was the point).
Karin, the project leader of InFutURe Wood (left) showed to Ida (center) and Sara (right) some joinery solutions that could inspire them in their work.
The soon-to-be architects focused on three research questions that will be answered in their thesis, a dissertation that will be published and defended in June 2020 :
1.How can we design and build with timber, to promote reuse of building structures in Sweden?
2.Who benefits from building for disassembly?
3.Which building system is most adapted for future reuse?
Very much in line with our project scope! We wish them good luck and will keep on being in touch with them.
